GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR

FSLA STATUS: Non-Exempt (Per Diem)

PAY BAND:  N/A

POSITION REPORTS TO:  Medical Wellness Director

JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL SUMMARY:

As a member of the Group Fitness Team, you are equal parts entertainer and educator while providing the ultimate group fitness experience for members of all ages and activity levels.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Teach classes as primary instructor or sub as needed in one or more of the following areas:  Yoga (different levels), Mat & Reformer Pilates, Zumba, Belly Dance, Body and Cardio Sculpt, Aqua, and a variety of other aerobic dance and muscle toning classes.
  • Offer challenging and educational exercise routines to help members reach their health and fitness goals.
  • Achieve daily class attendance goals by developing strong relationships with current class participants and striving to attract new participants.
  • Set up equipment, test microphone, and greet members as they enter fitness room. 
  • Support fellow instructor substitution needs.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and master class sessions as required.
  • Instruct safe and effective exercise classes.
  • Maintain all mandatory education certifications.
  • Follow all instructor sign-in/sign-out procedures.
  • Understand, and follow all policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Assist the Wellness Center with member retention.
  • Maintain constant communication with Wellness Center administrative offices and supervisor through email, phone, in person, etc.
  • Read and respond to emails, when needed, on a daily basis to foster consistent communication (email is the best communication channel to reach all group fitness instructors).
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience:

  • Must be ACE or AFAA and CPR certified, have class specific certification and a minimum of three years teaching group fitness classes in a wellness center or gymnasium. 
  • The incumbent must have passion for fitness, be able to work in a team environment, self-motivated, reliable, communicate well, motivate members, display great attitude, effective time management, and be able to work with little or no supervision.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Ability to work collaboratively with other employees, lead and motivate members and self motivated; must be able to smile at all times.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Outstanding communications skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Fluency in English is critical.  Employee must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Employee must be able to speak effectively with other employees of the organization and members. 
 
REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense, understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing and oral.
